Kim at Kim Klassen Cafe asked that we use two of any of her textures with our image this week. I'm still playing catch up with all I have to do so didn't spend a lot of time on this - but I did use 2 of her textures: Dark Scratched, soft light 60% and Cosmo, soft light 72%.
There are always lots of pretty images from the talented folks who join Kim on Tuesdays (I'm #82) - check it out!

texture tues: watercolor
Kim Klassen's popular Texture Tuesday has the theme "watercolor" using either her Let Go or Oh My texture this week. I took the theme very literally and chose one of my watercolor paintings from last year to experiment with.
Original painting:
I added the posterize PSE filter then added Kim's Let Go texture at pin light blending mode, 65% opacity.
Exploring further, I tried duplicating my image and adding sumi to the posterize, same KK texture.
It made the scene so much more stormy feeling, don't you think? Below I changed only the filter to overlay and look at the dramatic difference in feeling!
This is why the whole field of digital art is so engrossing! Each click brings an entirely different viewpoint to the same original image and there are SO many possibilities.
One more....original painting:
I was practicing my mountain profile edges.... Then I added Kim's Oh My texture, soft light 75%.
Then I added some PSE filters - ink outlines and water paper to see if it would give a more painterly effect.
So there's my filter and texture play for today..... Be sure to visit Kim's to see all the talented digital artists.

texture tuesday: soft
I missed a couple of Kim's challenges (Kim Klassen Cafe), but am making the time to jump in again. This week's prompt is "soft". My thoughts turned immediately to our cat, Tigger. She's about 14 years old, fluffy and long haired (what a mess!) and definitely soft.
Original picture:
Here's adding Kim's texture Fall In Grunge at linear burn 40%.
You can see it mostly added some distressing on the corners and edges.... Then I added another layer, her texture Little Things at soft light 80% to soften and brighten the image a bit.
Be sure to visit Kim Klassen's blog for more great images and manipulations as well as the occasional free texture so you can play along.

texture tuesday
I have two images to share for Kim Klassen's Texture Tuesday. {ED -oops - I just went to post my link and it's a black and white day! I got my wires crossed somewhere. Sorry, but I'd already done these, so my theme is... yellow?}
The ubiquitous flower picture - obviously I chose daffodils for spring and used Kim's texture Phoebe two ways (she offers free ones regularly). I converted one layer to black and white and the second I changed the hue to a pinkish tone, blended one at hard light, one at soft light and reduced opacity.
I tried again trying for that whitewashed look Kim seems to achieve so effortlessly - me, not so much. For one thing I tend to gravitate toward saturated colors but sometimes that white look is kinda cool. I still don't quite know how to achieve it....maybe I need white flowers? Above I added another texture layer Stamped Softly at linear light 30% and it became somewhat whiter/brighter. Instead of being romantic and soft it just seems a little blurry and washed out....hmmm.
This second image is a photo I took on a trip to China and I used the rusty vignette texture at vivid light 100% and erased the coverage over the building.
Be sure to check out other texture offerings at Kim's site.
By the way, I've added some new images and collages for purchase in my ETSY shop - hope you'll visit and check it out.

texture tuesday
I can't believe it's Tuesday already and I forgot to work on my digital Texture Tuesday images. Since I am up SO early this morning but in the interest of limited time, I got busy and have an experiment for you. I took the same image and added adjustments and textures from Nancy Donaldson and then redid it using textures from Kim Klassen - both of whom sponsor Texture Tuesday roundups. Which do you prefer, or, like my husband, do you prefer the original?
Original image:
Nancy Donaldson texture encaustic circles at vivid light 35% and a new one from her friend Marie, venetian (the letters) soft light 86%.
This one uses two Kim textures: pourvous (text) at hard light 40% and autumn burst at soft light 55%.
And just for chuckles, here's the image with all 4 textures activated......a bit overdone, but interesting.
Visit Kim and Nancy's sites to see more.....

texture tuesday: happy heart
I loved this theme and this texture. Kim at Kim Klassen Cafe offered a simple challenge this week - use her free texture Happy Hearts somewhere.
As I was thinking of what photo to play with this week, I realized that with a texture named Happy Hearts, the photo had to include my husband......since he makes my heart absolutely happy.
Original image (we were going out):
I used Happy Hearts at soft light 70%, duplicated it and used it at multiply 45%. Somehow it seems they should cancel each other out...one lightens, one darkens, but without both, the photo was either too washed out or too dark. Then I added Kim's Pink which put some texture on the blank wall. I erased around our faces a bit at reduced opacity to remove most but not all of the textures.
There are lots of talented participants on Texture Tuesday - check 'em out.

texture tuesday: white
Kim Klassen encouraged us to work with white this week. Not a usual subject or color way for me, none-the-less I scoured my photo archives and found a couple of different options.
Original photo:
Taken outside Caesar's in Las Vegas. Cropped & adjusted by duplicating the photo at screen, adding Kim's "word" texture at saturation 69% (removed much of the blue), and finally adding "anabelle" at pin light 54% for the music detail.
Original photo #2:
Daisies in my neighbor's yard. Adjusted by adding Kim's "word" at linear light blending mode 24% and then for some texture, "stamped softly" texture at soft light 69%.
Another fun exercise; thanks Kim! Please take a minute to see the other talented participants and maybe even join in yourself!

texture tuesday: anything goes
Kim at Kim Klassen's Cafe is leaving this week's Texture Tuesday (tomorrow) wide open - just use at least one of her free textures. This group makes THE most gorgeous, soft, romantic, elegant images filled with beautiful flowers and scenery. I usually comply. This week I'm a rebel! I had the idea of beginning with one of my collages, adding a texture and going from there. What I came up with surprised me and I think I've found a new tool to inspire painting/journal entries:
(ED: Ooops - as I went to link up, I discovered I apparently missed a week and this week's theme was to use her texture Felicity.....last week was free and easy. Oh well, hope you guys don't mind.... Next week's theme is to focus around the color white & texture. I'll remember, promise!)
My original images:
Some paint and collage of magazine pages.
The gazing ball in our yard covered with frost and shadows.
Kim's texture Ugg Love. Mix and stir and blend them all together and I came up with this:
I flattened my art and the texture to make a new 'texture' layer then applied it to the gazing ball at difference 85%, duplicated that layer again and used vivid light blending mode at 90%. One of the best things about textures and blending is the vast variety of results - it's such a great way to explore color combinations. I also tried these:
Look what happens when you distort one of the textures layers, offsetting the collage elements.
As you can see, the options are endless and just like with actual painting, the trick is knowing when to stop! Here's to a week of experimenting for all of us! Be sure to stop by Kim's and check out all the pretty and inspiring images.
Okay, here's one pretty one for those of you that made it this far:
I used two textures, Light Paper and If Only then erased most of each over the middle of the flower leaving only the edge details. FUN!
Also linking to Creative Every Day - I often forget to link to this each week, but it's a great resource to follow some really creative ladies.

texture tuesday: happiness
Kim Klassen's theme for today is happiness - what brings or represents happiness to me? My family, my boys (ahem, men!) I don't usually add textures to photos of people so this was a bit of a challenge and I'm not sure about the results, but.......it's a learning exercise, right? So here are my boys last month at the oldest's (left) 30th birthday party, being all cheesy for Mom.
Original image:
I tried converting it to black and white using an action from Coffeeshop Blog that brightened, etc all in one click of the mouse (pretty cool!), then added Kim's textures rusty vignette (don't think that's the actual name but I lost what it really is) at soft light 100% and then erased it over their clothes; then I added texture AndThenSome at screen 20%.
So then I tried it by using an action called Boost to heighten the contrast etc and then added textures: Rusty Vignette at multiply 33% and Black words (again lost the real name - if you know it let me know) soft light at 60% to arrive at this:
Then, just because I wasn't really loving either of these results - interesting but not great - I fell back to a nature picture to illustrate my family happiness:
A simple, basic treatment using Rusty Vignette (again wrong name I'm sure) at soft light 100% and added the quote, which I love. :)
Be sure to visit Texture Tuesday for even more visions of happiness!

texture tuesday: vermont bridge
Anything goes today over at Kim Klassen's Cafe blog - add any of her textures (lots of free goodies) to any of my photos. Sometimes wide open is more challenging because I don't know where to start. I randomly selected a vacation photo from Vermont and started playing.
Starting photo:
I started by duplicating the photo & applying soft light to boost the contrast. Then I applied two PSE filters - paint daubs and cutout to give it a somewhat painterly look. I then added two of Kim's textures - the free one from this week, Revolution, and Ugg Love with various opacity and blending modes used.
Final image:
Ugg love is a great crackle texture that kind of filled in the darks as if it were an old painting and the Revolution added that signature Kim light/bright warm coloration as well as vignetted the corners.
See what others have come up with at Kim's Cafe. And check back on Friday when I'll use the same image but with Bonnie's textures and come up with a totally different effect!
